webcast.berkeley ramping up for Fall

By obie

There’s two reasons why I haven’t blogged in a week. The first is that my last post speculating about Apple’s podcasting solutions skyrocketed in hits which I thought would let me coast a bit :) . In reality it was a one-day thing and I’ll admit it was sad to see the statistic chart redline at bottom again the next day. Ha, still learning about the fickle world of blogs. Man, definitely a lesson learned about what people want to read about (mention Apple, for starters).

But the main reason for the quiet is cuz things are so damn busy at work ramping up for the Fall semester. The webcast.berkeley gates are open and we’re busily building the schedule. We’ll have a returning all-star line up of profs from Astro, Bio, Chem, Computer Science, Engineering, Psych, and lots more. We’ve also got some new blood from new disciplines that I’m real excited about. Stay tuned for launch on August 25, and I’ll try to highlight some of them shortly after.

Coursecasting at this volume is only possible because of the automated web/podcast system we have in place. Last week was also about finishing some new code that makes our system more robust, mitigates errors, and a rebuilt front-end that makes small UI improvements but mainly makes it easier to maintain and enhance.

The coursecasts depend on the application, and the application depends on hardware installed in the classroom. This summer also saw the installation of podcast boxes to nine new classrooms, and replacements for two webcast (video) encoders. Some of these systems are still waiting for their IPs so we can get ‘em tested. Ah, last minute stuff like this keeps us on our toes.

Back to content, we’re building relationships across campus to produce fabulous new material and provide access to rich archives that just makes me giddy. My mantra: Every Event a Podcast! (pound fist on table to emphasize each word). Again, stay tuned.

OK, enough about webcast.berkeley. Sheesh, I need to get the site it’s own product blog.
